The battle of Lissa (Adriatic Sea), July 20, 1866 between Italian and Austrian Navies during the Italian 3rd war of Indipendence. The Italians were defeated by Admiral von Tegetthoff who said at the endo of the battle:
uomini di ferro su navi di legno avevano sconfitto uomini di legno su navi di ferro (iron men on wooden ships defeated wooden men on iron ships).
Itallian Commander Admiral Persano was tried the following year and found guilty of incompetence and lost his rank and his pension.
