Barbara and Ted Johnson had settled into a comfortable lifestyle when, at mid-life, they decided to join twenty-nine young Christians, who called their group Outspokin, to bicycle across the continent from the Pacific to the Atlanta. Their northern route was to take them over mountains, plains and rivers, through farmland, forests, and towns, from Oregon to New Hampshire.
The Johnsons soon discovered that this type of "community" living was foreign to any experience they'd had before. There were difficulties with some untrained and unprepared bikers, a few rebellious teens, and always a certain amount of suppression of their individualities. But there were many compensations. Each and every one of the fifty-four days was filled with awesome discoveries about God's great outdoors. And, more importantly, was the discovery of the rich variety of people and communities they found spread across the continent.
A close interaction with their fellow bikers, who once had been strangers, plus their own pilgrimage of self-discovery brought the Johnsons a deeper Christian awareness of the Maker's unmistakable touch in all of nature and in mankind.
Based on her fascinating diary, Barbara Johnson honestly portrays the trials and joys of personal growth on this seven-week trek-constantly placing it in the changing kaleidoscope that is America.
If you can possibly make such a journey, Barbara Johnson says-"It's worth it." If you really can't live the adventure vicariously through this inspirational and entertaining account.
