"On May 31, 1873 Heinrich Schliemann, far on the lofty plains of windy Troy, wrote in his journal, "Eight or nine meters down I laid bare the stretch of the circuit wall of Troy by the Scaean Gate and discovered, in a room of the House of Priam adjoining this wall, a copper container . . . filled with silver vases and with silver and gold cups (Fig. 1.1)."
