This book was written as a supplement to the book "Caves of Tennessee" which was published in 1961 and which describes approximately 700 Tennessee caves. The two (2) books combined describe over 1,000 Tennessee caves.
Many people are surprised to find that although this book was first printed in 1971, it is still in print and available from the Tennessee Division of Geology and other sources.
There are separate sections of Vertebrate Paleontology and Saltpeter Mining. The saltpeter mining occured primarily during the War of 1812 and the Civil War. Saltpeter was the main ingredient of gunpowder. There are photographs of a variety of mining artifacts that still survive in the dry portions of Tennessee caves.
