Gaston of Chester is a history of a great patriot family of upstate SC during the War for Independence. John Justice Gaston and his wife Esther (Waugh) imigrated from Ireland in the mid 1700's and settled briefly in Pennsylvania before coming South. The couple had a number of children. Tragically, four of their sons died on August 6, 1780 at the Battle of Hanging Rock defending the liberty of our land. Their home was burned by Tarleton and nothing remains but a road marker. The patriot couple are buried together in the Burnt Meeting House Cemetary in Chester County, SC near an area known as "Wylies Mill."
