The Tangled Tongue chronicles the author's personal struggles and triumphs with and over his chronic stutter. Carlisle obviously has a deep personal connection to his topic and weaves often sad, sometimes humourous, tales and anecdotes into his book. He also discusses various treatments that have been used over the course of history as well as some of the more contemporary treatments he himself pursued. He mentions other people, some famous, who have also learned to live with this impediment. It is a book founded on honesty, courage and good old fashioned common sense along with supportive information from the medical profession and scientific community.
