"In this chapter I want to argue that much of the subject matter, theoretical inclinations, meta-theoretical assumptions and methodologies that characterize the sociology of education can be seen to emerge, not so much from a conscious process of academic or intellectual deliberation, as from the operation of what I will refer to as a 'selection principle'."
