The publishing of this book culminates almost 50 years of research and the collection of information from all parts of the United States on this family line. This book contains data on the progenitor Francis HOGWOOD who died in Virginia between 1676 and 1678, an Englishman of Scottish descent who arrived in this country on or about 1650, his wife Elizabeth CREED and many of their descendants up to the year the book was published in 1984. Many of the descendants have spelled the name in various ways over the generations, ie. HAGOOD, HAYGOOD, HAGWOOD, HAGUEWOOD, HAIGWOOD, HEGWOOD and HAIGHWOOD.

First Sentence
"The progenitor, Francis HAWKWOOD/HAWGOOD/HOGWOOD was probably the first of our ancestors (his wife's family may have arrived earlier) to reach the shores of America from England and settle in the new colony of Virginia which had seen the arrival, only ca. 43 years before, of Captain Jon SMITH in May 1607 with the first three boatloads of English immigrants settling on the northeast shore of the James River. The first known record of our progenitor is found on 12 Aug 1650 in Patent Book Vol. 2, pg. 248 listing Fra. HAWKWOOD at which time he received a patent for 5 acres of land in Charles City County, VA, along with 49 other settlers. The land was located "near the head of the Powells Creek adj. to the land called Weynoake old Town" (Cavaliers and Pioneers Vol. 1, pg 198 by Nell Marion NUGENT, 1963)."
