Having lost 2 loves in his life, he is contented to live a solitary life rearing his only son, Robbie, born 8 years earlier. However, his son has other plans. Robbie rents the house he inherited from his mother to Libby Hart, who has a secret she is running from. She is drawn from the west coast to Pine Creek, Maine, where she tries to figure out what to do about it and her new life.
