"1. UP TO 1899. Charles Edward Ives was the son of George E. Ives (1845-94), a versatile bandmaster whose parents were transcendentalists (according to family tradition Emerson was their guest when he lectured at Danbury in 1859), and Mary Elizabeth Parmelee (1849-1929), whose mother was a choir singer of local prominence; he was born in Danbury, Connecticut, on 20 October 1874."
