Edition Notes

This work is taken from "The Rev. J.W. Loguen as a Slave and a Freeman," published in 1859 in Syracuse by J.G.K. Truair. I first came across this book last year in the catalog for the Onondaga County Public Library and was amazed by Loguen's story. Unfortunately, the only way someone could read this rare book would be to go to the fourth floor of the library as I did. To make this wonderful work more accessible, I decided to reprint the last 80 pages which deals with Loguen's life as a freeman in Syracuse. My goal is to make Loguen as famous as Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglas in abolitionist history, and to make him the most famous citizen of Syracuse.
