The Prayer of Matthias and other plays for worship is a collection of short plays and monologues written to enhance Christian worship. The plays are based on incidents from the gospels and the book of Acts, and the characters are mostly peripheral to the main action of the biblical stories, trying to make sense of what's happening around them; the scripts often contain large doses of humor. This causes the familiar stories to become strange and new for those seeing the performance.
The scripts have been written specifically for performance in churches. None of them require elaborate sets, and most can be performed on a bare stage.
The author, who has a Ph.D. in dramatic art, has provided other helps. The scriptures to which the plays are related are listed, and the scripts are placed within the Christian calendar to aid their use in a structured worship program. Dr. Velma Ruch has written the preface, and the author has provided an introductory essay with a brief overview of the history of the relationship between worship and drama (as well as pointers on acting, directing, and playwriting). There is also an appendix with the author's own insights into individual plays, as well as pointers on how to make a simple, but decent biblical costume.
