This is a scholarly life-and-work monograph on the very prolific artist Mira Schendel (1919-1988), an important figure in the development of modern art in Brazil. Born in Switzerland, educated in Italy, and en emigre to Brazil in 1949, she was closely associated with a number of prominent philosophers, scientists and writers in Sao Paolo, particularly through the 1960s. The Tate Modern, London, hosted a retrospective exhibition of her work in 2012 which then travelled on to Portugal and Brazil. Based on a very close study of her work and diaries, Souza Dias's book is so far the most comprehensive and reliable source of information about the artist. There is a Portuguese edition, but it has not been translated into English.
