Edition Notes
Soliciting subscriptions for establishing the permanent seat of Rhode Island College at Newport, with the stipulation that such contributions would be void if Newport were not chosen.
Followed by a second leaf listing subscribers and amounts pledged.
After the first class was graduated at Warren, R.I., Sept. 11, 1769, a spirited contest for the honor of a permanent home for the college was undertaken among the leading towns of the colony. The choice fell to Providence and in 1770 the first college building was erected on the college grounds, the cost being covered chiefly by subscriptions from residents of Providence.
