The Mohawk Valley Ehles and allied families

The Mohawk Valley Ehles and Allied Families chronicles the descendants of three early Ehle immigrants to the Mohawk Valley of New York. The Dominie (Rev.) Johan Jacob Ehle arrived from Germany about 1723. He was ordained by the Bishop of London and came to America to provide spiritual guidance to his kinsmen in the New World and convert as many of the indigenous population to Christianity as possible. About 1745, Hermanus Ehle and Johannes Ehle arrived. These two men are reported to be the younger half-brothers to Johan Jacob. This book describes six generations of descendants of these three men, linking numerous other Mohawk Valley families in the process and spanning the continent as family members migrated west.

This book differs in content from most genealogies in the inclusion of a significant amount of detailed source material including baptism, marriage, census, obituary and biographical sketches. This work significantly extends the previous Ehle family genealogy written by Boyd Ehle and published in 1930.

Eight generations in total are documented in a modified register format covering 745 pages, supplemented by an additional 115 pages of detailed appendices covering Revolutionary War pension files, bible records, analysis of probate and other legal documents, and personal letters. The register index lists over 4000 descendants/spouses. Surnames with eleven or more indexed entries include:

AHLE (19), ALLEN (21), BETTINGER (26), BOWERS (11), BRISTOL (13), BROWN (13), BRUSH (16), BUTLER (21), BUSS (29), CAMPBELL (26), CHEESE (12), COBB (17), COTTRELL (15), CROTSENBURG (36), CROUSE (13), DELAP (30), DIEFENDORF (20), DUNCKEL/ DUNCKLE (36), EHLE (821), ENO (14), EWING (14), FAILING (12), FAKE (17), FOX (55), GATES (13), GRAHAM (12), GREENWOOD (14), HAWN (30), HELMER (56), HESSLER (33), HOUGHTALING (15), HOWARD (33), KNOX (84), KYSER (12), LANING (20), LIPE (26), LOUCKS (12), McCANNON (14), MOYER (26), NELLIS (33), NORTON (13), PICKARD (17), PRIEST (69), RANSIER (13), REESE (55), REYNOLDS (25), RICKARD (40), SHAVER (12), SHIMEALL (14), SMITH (38), SPONENBURG (22), STEWART (36), STORMS (16), TAYLOR (21), TIMMERMAN (17), THOMPSON (11), VAN SCHAICK (16), VAN SLYKE (22), VAN VALKENBURGH (11), VAN WIE (16), VISGER (14), WALRADT (23), WALRATH (32), WALTS (15), WEST (11), WHEELER (14), WILDER (12), WILSON (21), YOUNG(S) (38), ZOLLER (81)
