Edition Notes
Mauban, A. Jean Marot, p. [76]-98, 214-216
Engraved renderings, plans, elevations of buildings and monuments mostly in or near Paris. Most plates are signed: I. Marot fecit.
One of a number of compilations published in the 17th and 18th centuries of Marot's important work on French architecture known as the Grand Marot. Editions vary in number and selection of plates and often are without title or name of publisher. According to Mauban, the first edition was published by Marot, the second by Jean Mariette (1727), the third by Charles Antoine Jombert (1751), and subsequent editions by Jombert, by Jacques François Blondel ("Le Grand Blondel"), and others. Cf. A. Mauban. Jean Marot, architecte et graveur parisien, 1944, p. 76 ff.
This compilation includes some plates (e.g., views of Les Invalides) that Mauban identifies as part of a 1753 edition published by Jombert under the title: Les délices de Paris et des environs. Cf. Mauban, p. 214-216.
LC copy has 196 plates, incl. 28 folded double or quadruple plates, bound in 1 v. Purchased from bookseller Karl W. Hiersemann in 1931 (but is without the 2 contents leaves described in the firm's Kat. 610, no. 223). In conservation binding; table of contents in typescript and manuscript inserted in back pocket.
