An incomplete transcript of Bibliotheca Phillippica MS 8187 by Sir Thomas Phillipps, this partial edition of Juan de Tovar's "Historia de los indios mexicanos" was important in bringing the work to the attention of 19th-century Meso-Americanists such as Ephraim Squier. See David Hook, "An Accidental Americanist: Sir Thomas Phillipps and Juan de Tovar's 'Historia de los indios mexicanos' (Bibliotheca Phillippica MS 8187)", at : http://hdl.handle.net/1983/992; the original MS is now in the John Carter Brown Library, and since its acquisition there it has been much studied, not least for its information on the Aztec calendar. Phillipps's partial edition is a good example of the poor printing associated with his private Middle Hill Press and the other jobbing printers whom he employed; it consists of sheets printed in different types, to a different layout, over a period of years. Copies sometimes appear on the antiquarian book market, but it is a rare item.
