Kitten (Catharine Anne Carpenter) seventeen, pretty, just arrived in London for a year's visit with her godmother, Reina Harkness, a prominent English writer, meets Miss Harkness's charming young next door neighbor, Peter Finch. They meet by accident when Kitten, in a dense London fog, mistakes his dorway for Reina's and enters his house! He takes her home, they have tea, and when he has left, Reina confesses a frightening secret. Someone has been walking about in the upstairs drawing room, though she has thought herself along in the house all afternoon! The following day Kitten sees the prisms of the great chandelier hanging in the hall stairwell dancing for no apparent reason!
A frightening day comes when Kitten solves the mystery and thereby jeopardizes her own life. But all is not mystery. The reader sees lovely young Queen Elizabeth at a royal garden party; one discovers delightful things about Peter.
An enchanting novel for young moderns.
