"ALTHOUGH she enjoys the distinction of being the first identifiable woman writer in French, and certainly one of the first (if not the very first) extant fabulist of either sex in any of the western vernaculars, and although her work has generated a vast bibliography of scholarly studies, the poet called "Marie de France," like many medieval writers, remains an enigmatic figure."
