Rhymes with reasons

speech exercises for juniors

I am not sure that the book really is the one that I am talking about, but I used the book of that title from 1975 to 1977 in primary school. It contains poems that serve as pronunciation exercises. For example, here is an exercise for the sound "ah".

My father's car is a Jaguar
And Pa drives rather fast.
Castles, farmyards, draughty barns
We go charging past.

Here is an exercise for dynamics - you are supposed to start quietly and speak louder with each line.

Pitter, patter drops of rain
Tapping on the window pane.
Now the rain is coming down
On all the houses in the town -
Beating, battering shops and shutters
Swirling leaves into the gutters,
Wildly lashing leaves and trees,
Pelting crops and stormy seas.
The river roars, the bridge is shaking.
Stand back! Stand back! The bridge is breaking.
