This book includes several historical photographs (primarily portraits) and is marked Volume I; however, to the best of my knowledge, no Volume 2 exists.

Excerpts

From the Foreword to the Reprint Edition (1972) by George Shumway, Publisher:
The history of the Shumway family in America reflects well the growth and development of the American people. Peter Shumway, from whom all Shumways have descended, was born in 1635 and apparently came to America between 1660 and 1675. He settled in Massachusetts, fought as a soldier in King Phillips War of 1675, and raised a family. From this beginning the Shumway family grew, spreading first in the other colonies of New England. As time went on and the country developed, the newer generations moved on toward the West. Shumways settled in New York State and Pennsylvania, and other moved on to the Midwest. And in the latter part of the nineteenth century some pushed on to settle in the Far West.

To make Volume II a reality will call for the aid and assistance of many members of the family. To be practical, family members will have to send genealogical information to a central point where it can be collected, edited, and eventually put into book form. This publishing office will serve as a collecting point for this information. My cousin, Mrs. Nola Shumway Brumfield, has agreed to work on the collection of the information and the editing of it, but the help of others would be appreciated.

This written genealogy of the Shumway family from 1660 through 1909, with accompanying photographs and letters, serves as a study of the settling of America, and the growth of a great family from one French Huguenot named Peter. It also describes a method for updating the genealogy of the Shumway family post-1909 to be published as Volume II.
