With wood-engraved decorative head-pieces and tail-pieces printed in red.

Lithographed plates are printed in brown. All are unsigned and with title captions.

Chromolithographed plates are unsigned. Some are with title captions.

Text pages, plates and binding are in the shape of a shield. Text is printed parallel to the spine with each line conforming to the shield shape of the book.

MASS copy: Bound in green sand-grain cloth blocked in gold. Covers with red pebble-grain cloth onlay blocked in gold. Covers with signature: "JL" [i.e. John Leighton]. Boards with bevelled edges; a.e. stained red. With red glazed endpapers. With ownership label: "Anthony David Estill". Encased in later red and green calico cloth-covered clamshell box lined with green velvet and with paper title label on spine. Case with label: "Box by A. D. E".
