"Memoir of the lifetime of John Andrew Rice. Combines crafty storytelling, historical witness, and ethical wisdom, and it should take a prominent place in the lineage of nonfiction Southern writing from Frederick Douglass to Zora Neale Hurston and Eudora Welty.
