Pour garder le souvenir de ces propos Véri tient une 'mémoire de papier,' un Journal secret où il porte un regard acéré (un 'coup d'œil juste et fin' pour Michelet) sur l'évolution de la vie politique et sociale en France et dans le monde durant les quinze années précédant la Révolution (ainsi est-il informé directement et presque immédiatement du déroulement des négociations avec la Grande-Bretagne pour la reconnaissance de l'indépendance des Etats-Unis ou rencontre-t-il Joseph II dans une longue conversation privée). C'est un document historique exceptionnel. A l'automne 1789 il quitte Paris pour sa province natale du Comtat où il est propriétaire d'un domaine rural. In 1774, the abbot of Véri, after a highly esteemed career in the Catholic Church (mostly in Rome) settles in Paris. There he meets Minister Maurepas, recently chosen by the young Louis XVI to be his main advisor. Véri and Maurepas have known each other intimately for twenty-five years; they meet almost daily (with other ministers as well), and have long conversations. To keep the memory of these meetings, Véri keeps a memoir, a secret diary in which he takes a sharp look (a 'fair and fine glance' for Michelet) at the evolution of political and social life in France and the world during the fifteen years preceding the Revolution. He writes immediately of the negotiations with Great Britain for the recognition of the independence of the United States and of when he meets Joseph II privately. In the autumn of 1789 he leaves Paris for his native province of Comtat where he owns a rural estate. He continues to write in his journal and reflects on the events in Avignon and the evolution of revolutionary France. This work is an exceptional historical document.
