"Most off the poems were written with no other hope, than that they would instruct or please some child. The pleasure they have given in a limited circle, has tempted the writer to print them. Some have never before appeared in public, but most of them have been already published in different works--some few, without the author's knowledge"--Preface to the first American Edition.

MASS copy: Bound in later blue pebble-grain cloth with the spine tooled in gold; a.e. speckled red. With ink stamp: "Kinch, Liverpool". Bound with the original upper free endpaper that includes embossed stamp: "Misses Farrar Stationers British Telegraph Office Halifax". Original endpaper also includes ownership inscriptions: "Eliza Townson 24 10 Mo. 1860" and "Eliza Townson 24 10 Mo. 1868".
