The story of the life of Andreas Franz Hofer, born 1821 in Önsbach, Baden, and died in 1904 in the USA. An essentially factual biography, told in the first person, with some anecdotal embellishments. Compiled and edited by his daughter, Amalie Hofer Jerome, from notes and letters that he left behind. Begins with description of his early years growing up in Baden. Includes his account of the Republican Uprising in Germany (1848-1849), and his subseqent flight to America through Switzerland. Descriptions of immigrant life on the Lower East Side of NYC, his marriage and move to Iowa. Latter part of book tells of his settling in Iowa, his part in the American Civil War and the raising of his family. Includes many anecdotes referring to his sisters in America and his one sister who remained in Germany.
