The opening paragraphs of this letter of Abbé Maillard are a translation of the first part of his letter to M. de Lalane, superior of the Séminaire des missions étrangères in Paris, published from the original ms. in v. 3 of Les soirées canadiennes, Quebec, 1863, p. [289]-426. Except in the first paragraphs, the two letters are entirely different
The "Memorial of the motives of the savages" has also been attributed to Maillard. cf. Casgrain. Les Sulpiciens et les prêtres des Missions-étrangeres en Acadie, 1897, p. 437-442
