This is the 1923 edition of The Outlaws of Ravenhurst, the later version having some slight changes in words and dialogue, as well as plot. In this book, Catholics are sometimes referred to as Papists. This term was originally invented to mock those loyal to the Pope, but soon the Catholics adopted it as a term of esteem.

Work Description
The Outlaws of Ravenhurst is a fascinating story of a Charles Gordon, young heir of Ravenhurst. Born in Scotland during a time of fierce persecution of the Catholic Faith, his uncle Stephen, a Catholic priest, smuggles him to Maryland, Virgina when he is just an infant. There he grows up with the large Shannon family and his "twin" Joel. Daddy Shannon, a staunch Catholic, teaches him many valuable things. "There is nothing worth buying, not fast horses nor fine houses, not even a place in the King’s court, if the price you pay for it is the fire of Hell for evermore," he tells his young adopted son whom he loves as his own. When his Uncle, Sir Roger, arrives in Maryland unexpectedly from Scotland, demanding the heir of Ravenhurst to be returned to his true homeland, Gordon's Faith is tested as it never was before. Will he remain true to Daddy Shannon's teachings and his own good mother, or will his Uncle and his evil men, by first flattery, then violence, manage to make Gordon abandon his Faith? This is a thrilling book for Catholics old and young, and it will truly inspire its readers with a fresh zeal for the Catholic Faith.
Excerpts
“We’re going to fight it out right now; and, Daddy, this time—God helping me—I’ll play the man.”
Sir Roger drew up his horse with a jerk that turned the foam red from the points of the bit.
“Where did you see Stephen Douglas? Where did he give you the papistical Sacraments? The truth, sir, or it will be the worse for you!”
Amazed, the boy stared at him. How could Sir Roger have learned so soon ?
“No words are needed. Your face speaks for you.”
Godfrey laughed unpleasantly. Gordon’s tongue was never made for cunning speeches. It was always yes or no with him. Tell a lie ? He never had. Tell the truth ? Betray Friar Stephen? Not while the breath of life stirred in him! So he said nothing.
This excerpt shows Gordon's spirit of courage, honesty, and loyalty to his faith.
