The volume published in 1894 comprises 276 pages of text, and some leading matter, illustrations (images) and pedigrees (family trees) not numbered. There is some fairly thin narrative history of the village of Chipping and its surrounding area, situated in North-East Lancashire, England, and includes extensive quotations from the small amount of contemporaneous documentation available over the period, from about 1400AD to 1850AD. The sources include deeds, leases, court records and wills. There are references to the more important families of the time, with a range of individuals from aristocrats to peasants, but principally yeomen (such people being bound to the land by their nature but with the means to leave a mark in history).
