Edition Notes

Front cover lettered: The recantation of Thomas Payne.
In 1878 a copy of the original pamphlet, then in the possesion of B.F. Turner, president of Eminence College, Ky., was loaned to Z.F. Smith, who published a transcript of it, with notes, in the Apostolic Times of April 12, 1878, and in the Louisville Courier-Journal, April--, 1878. The "Recantation" was freely copied by many other papers and variously commented upon. The present editor accepts it as genuine, but cf. J.W. Francis, Old New York, 1866, p. 138-139; Conway's Life of Paine, v. 2, p. 410-411; Sabin, v. 16, p. 402.
