L'obscurité descendait sur le monde et le monde changeait..
Roland, le pistolero, s'éveille sur une grève déserte. Issus de la mer, des monstres carnivores l'attaquent et lui dévorent quelques doigts des mains et des pieds... Affaibli, rongé par l'infection, il sent qu'il va mourir s'il ne franchit pas la Porte qui mène à d'autres espaces-temps.
De l'autre côté, il rencontrera Eddie le junkie, puis, dans l'Amérique des années 60, Detta/Odetta, "la Dame d'Ombre", à la fois ange et démon...
Mais le pistolero n'a pas oublié Jake, l'enfant sacrifié. Hanté par ce souvenir, il doit abattre la troisième carte la Mort.
Alors, seulement, il pourra reprendre sa quête et atteindre la Tour sombre...

The gunslinger came awake from a confused dram which seemed to consist of a single image: that of the Sailor in the Tarot deck from which the man in black had dealt (or purported to deal) the gunslinger's own moaning future.
