"Between Resistance and Collaboration is a study of the impact of the Nazi occupation of northern France on the local population. With the establishment of a military dictatorship and a controlled economy, the local population faced serious hardship. This book explores the impact of those changes on the people and how they dealt with the hardships caused by the changes.
What is surprising is the variety of means available to the French, both to protest against the hardships and force the authorities to do something about them and to evade the plethora of regulations, political and economic, when the authorities were unable or unwilling to act. The range of forms of protest included strikes and work stoppages, pillaging, foot riots, black marketing and theft.
The picture that is painted is of a more complex relationship between occupier and occupied than is typically assumed."--BOOK JACKET.
