Daniel Lofton isn't wild about being the center of attention, but once he remains seated during the Pledge of Allegiance, all eyes are on him.
Some see the ninth-grader as a budding radical. "This is nothing new for you, but you're becoming more of an antiestablishment freak," Matt Burkhart says on the way to school.

Others believe he has no respect for his native country. "Getting some anti-American literature from the old locker?" Mike Lyons asks in the hall.

And others admire his strength. "Justice isn't a word to him, it's something we do, or else we're involved in injustice," Taylor Price tells people.

Though keenly aware that his opposition to the Pledge may be unpopular, Daniel is not ready for the changes that will come with every friend and acquaintance.
