St. Giles Receiving through his Hand the Arrow aimed at the Hind. (Flemish School.) Page 97.
St. Giles, an Athenian, came to France, and lived as a holy Hermit in the Forest of Nismes— a name of good repute among friends of animals, since it was a Bishop of Nismes who wrote the protest, printed elsewhere, against the introduction of bull-baiting into France. The HERMIT made friends with a hind, who was one day hunted by a Prince ; and the Prince's arrow the Hermit intercepted with his hand.
St. Jerome Companioned by Animals. (Diirer.) Page 129.
St. Jerome is commonly shown in Art with a lion, about whom there is the legend that it companioned and guarded him in return for his having- fearlessly extracted a thorn from its paw. A second beast (sometimes mentioned as a donkey, sometimes as a lamb) is assigned to the Saint's companion- ship and to the protection of the lion.
St. Anthony the Hermit and his Hog. (Nicolo Pisano.) Page 193.
