SHIFTING

30 Short Studies for Young Violinists

  • 1 Want to read

Geringas introduces a sort of free shifting based on ear training - the exercises require the ability to hear the intervals. His idea is that for young students, it's easier to play in higher positions and shifting should be introduced as soon as the student has acquired the basic finger patterns, preferably within the first year of study. All the etudes in this book are original pieces by the author. He has divided his pieces into 5 different types with the 6th being "Various Shifts" and labels each piece A-F accordingly.

Edition Notes

As far as I know there is no recorded companion to this volume. This would be a good addition. I videotape the excercises for my students so they can hear as well as see the proper shifts.
I didn't change the capitalization used in the book, in retyping the TOC. It's a little erratic.
There are line drawing illustrations in the edition I purchased (copyright 1987), as well as an isolated section in the beginning called "Basic Exercises for Shifting." The next edition has left out the illustrations and incorporates the "Basic Exercises" section into the song pages. Personally I prefer the Basic Exercises as an isolated section for my use in teaching. (Editions don't seem to be numbered.)
