After twenty-five happy years of marriage, Alan and Janet are still in love as deeply as the day of their wedding, and the indulgent man believes he knows his familiar wife's every desire. When Janet happens to suggest one night in bed that it might be nice to have a live-in domestic to help out with household chores, Alan is dubious, but the good-natured man will humor her.
He is rather surprised, however, when almost immediately thereafter Janet just happens to have found a likely candidate, an acquaintance of hers who is a doctoral student in anthropology. The sloe-eyed girl, slender and youthful, is indeed fun and friendly and helpful. Witty and charming, she is a joy to have around.
Yet the girl is also almost impossibly attractive to the faithful man. Surely she does mean to lure him so, he tells himself, but his primitive hindbrain cannot help but seethe with the grunting instincts of a million years of undeniable evolution.
Poor Alan suffers secretly in silence. He loves his wife, yet still he cannot stop fantasizing wildly about this new member of his household. He knows it is wrong, but the guilty man is helpless before the dark-haired girl's charms.
When matters finally threaten to careen out of control, Alan tries to make a stand. But even then he has not yet realized just who is hiding what from whom...
