VARIABLES RELATED TO WEIGHT LOSS AND MANAGEMENT: LONG-TERM FOLLOW-UP (EATING HABITS, EXERCISE).

Fifty-seven subjects who, had previously undergone weight loss treatment completed the Eating Inventory and the Five-category Questionnaire, an extensive survey of behavioral, experiential, and attitudinal aspects of weight management. Subjects, who were 2 $1□over2 □$to 4 years posttreatment, were grouped according to weight loss history as maintainers, regainers, treatment failures, and dropouts. A wide range of features did distinguish the maintainers from the less successful subjects: higher scores on the Restraint Scale of the Eating Inventory, a more proactive stance toward weight maintenance, better management of eating in response to emotion, and better response to treatment in terms of weight loss. There were no differences in incidence of binge eating, exercise habits, and achievement of normal weight. A high percentage of all subjects reported that they had, at one time, achieved a normal weight. A high percentage also reported exercising, although exercise habits did not distinguish the maintainers from the other groups. Subjects were older than those typical of weight loss research and had a high incidence of medical illness, particularly cardiovascular disease. The development of posttreatment weight management strategies is recommended.
