Gabriel Welter

This archeologist was born in Metz, and died in Athens. He did excavations in the Elzas at the age of 14. He received a stipendium from the German Emperor Wilhelm the 2nd, who visited Metz, and who was impressed by the escavationcollection of the young Gabriel.
Gabriel studied in Berlin, and later he worked for the Archaelogisches Institut des Deutches Reiches in Greece: mostly in Athens and on the island of Aegina and Naxos, and in Palestina. He is known from his excavations of the Aphaia-tempel of Aegina, and the work on the Colonna.
He was married to a Dutch woman: Enna Mauve, a violist, who was related to the painter Anton Mauve. They got two children, Ferréol and Carl Christian.
They separated in 1936 and Gabriel started a new relationchip in 1946, with a Greek woman:
Marika Stini.
It is possible that they had a daughter together, named Anna. The family is still looking for her..
