Born at Olean, New York; educated at Concordia College, Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri; served as pastor at Sugar Grove and Logan, Ohio, 1886–90, and Mount Clemens, Michigan, 1890–1914; president of the Michigan District, The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, 1912–14; professor at Concordia Seminary, Springfield, Illinois, 1914–26; Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, 1926–46. Staunch defender of verbal inspiration of Holy Scripture; influenced thinking of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod along confessional Lutheran lines. Contributed to Lehre und Wehre, Theological Monthly, and Concordia Theological Monthly; other works include Scripture Cannot Be Broken; Reason or Revelation? Editor-in-chief for the English translation of Francis Pieper's Christliche Dogmatik which was published 1950–57 (St. Louis: Concordia Pub. House) titled Christian Dogmatics.
