Phillip Manning is an award-winning author based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He is the author of five books for the Essential Chemistry and Science Foundations series published by Chelsea House and four books for the Afoot in the South series published by John F. Blair. Manning is a regular book reviewer for the Raleigh News & Observer, and for several other newspapers, including the San Francisco Chronicle and the Cleveland Plain Dealer. He also teaches writing for the North Carolina Writer’s Network and a course on the Foundations of Science for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Duke University. Manning has a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His wife Diane is an artist, who takes occasional breaks from her own work to illustrate his books.-LARB
