Frances E. Russell

From newspaper (unknown)

25 years of writing

TORONTO—Miss Frances Russell, editor of Onward a United Church senior Sunday school paper with 70,000 circulation, was honored by associates last month on completion of 25 years with the Department of Sunday School Publications.

Miss Russell began her career as a writer of Sunday school materials, and for a period in the 1940's edited three papers, Story Hour, The Canadian Boy, and Onward.

She comes from a family with strong missionary traditions. Her mother, who lives in Toronto, is the daughter of a Welsh Baptist missionary, whose self-effacement sometimes resulted in his giving away most of his coats. Miss Russell's father was a brilliant man who entered university in Manitoba at the age of 15 after winning the provincial gold medal. He had an MA, plus a degree in theology and was in India when 23. He served 46 years and played a role in the formation of the modern United Church of Northern India.

Miss Russell holds degrees in classics and library science.

She says one of her satisfactions is in having inaugurated the Canadian Boy's "own page" 20 years ago, to which boys were invited to submit articles and drawings in weekly competition. Several became professional writers and artists.

IBBY Canada - Frances E. Russell Grant

The Frances E. Russell Grant was established by the late Marjorie Russell in memory of her sister, Frances E. Russell, a longtime supporter of IBBY Canada. The $1,000 grant is intended to support IBBY Canada's mission "to initiate and encourage research in young people's literature in all its forms" and is given in support of research for a publishable work (a book or a paper) on Canadian children's literature.
