James Calvert was born in born in Pickering, Yorkshire, England. He was a printer, bookbinder, and bookseller. During an illness, he experienced a mystical calling to missionary work. In 1831 he graduated from the Wesleyan Theological Institution in Hoxton. In 1837 he married Mary Fowler and they travelled to Fiji along with Calvert's friend John Hunt, for the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society.
He worked as a missionary at Rewa and Lakeba until 1856 when he returned to England to oversee publication of the Fijian Bible. In 1857 he returned to Fiji, where he stayed for another nine years. In 1866 he returned to England, but he returned to missionary work, this time in South Africa, in 1872. In 1880 he returned to England and became a minister at City Road, London. In 1885 he went to Fiji for the mission jubilee, and then wet on to tour Australia and America on behalf of the mission. In 1887 he returned to England to become minister at Finsbury Park, where he continued to revise the Fijian Bible.
