Philip Roy was born and raised in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. He studied music and history before choosing a career in writing. Philip’s love for the ocean, enjoyment of traveling, and fascination for submarines has led to the creation of the Submarine Outlaw Series (SOS). These are tales of high adventure on the seas and waterways of the world, but also involve mythology, geography, ecology, invention and an embracing love of people, places, animals and things. The Submarine Outlaw series details the adventures of a young submariner, Alfred Pynsent, and his quirky crew of a dog and a seagull, as they journey around the world. The series includes the following five books:
Submarine Outlaw, Journey to Atlantis, River Odyssey, Ghosts of the Pacific, and Outlaw in India (www.ronsdalepress.com). Philip’s sixth novel in the Submarine Outlaw series, Seas of South Africa, will be published in the summer of 2013. Philip has also published a young-adult novel of historical fiction, Blood Brothers in Louisbourg. This novel focuses on the story of two brothers, one of French origins, and the other of Mik'maw and French descent, as they face the siege of Louisbourg in 1745. Currently, Blood Brothers in Louisbourg is being optioned for film, and will be translated into French in the spring of 2013 (www.cbup.com). On the rare occasions that Philip is not traveling and visiting schools, he divides his time between Antigonish and Halifax, where he continues to write novels and compose music.
Philip’s awards and nominations include first prize in the Atlantic Writing Competition, the Silver Medal for Foreword's Best Book of the Year, runner-up for the New England Book Festival Award, and the Green Book Award (San Francisco). He has been short-listed for the Red Maple, Diamond Willow, Rocky Mountain, Langley Boy, Hackmatack, and Brimer awards. His novels have been selected several times for Best Books for Kids and Teens.
