María del Carmen Iglesias

María del Carmen Iglesias Cano (Madrid, March 16, 1942) is a Spanish historian, professor and academic, expert in the 18th century. She has been a member of the Royal Academy of History since 1991, an institution she has directed since 2014, being the first woman to hold the position. She has also been a member of the Spanish Royal Academy since 2000, occupying seat E (and capital). She was the tutor of the Infanta Cristina and preceptor of Felipe VI. She holds the non-hereditary title Countess of Gisbert, which was bestowed on her by King Juan Carlos. As Director of the Royal Academy of History, she has been responsible for the launch of the electronic version of Spain´s dictionary of national biography, the Diccionario biográfico español.
