Famous novel about an tragic love and tragic life of a miller's daughter.
Love and family duty form the central threads of this classic, tragic tale by one of Britain's finest novelists.
Summary
The Mill on the Floss is one of the most affecting stories of family loss, tragedy and fate in the history.
It is close to Wuthering Heights. It was published in 1860. It is the story of Maggie Tulliver,
who is the daughter of an English miller.
Like many nineteenth century literary girls, her intelligence and emotions cause problems.
Maggie turns to Philip Wakem, son of a local lawyer - unpleasantly deformed.
Disaster strikes their relationship.
After the early death of Mr Tulliver, Maggie leaves the mill for St Oggs where her cousin Lucy lives.
Stephen compromises her reputation while boating on the river.
Maggie refuses to marry him and her life is as good as ruined.
