Indispensable book for those interested in Polar exploration and adventure. Well written (by a scientist!). Begins with brief history of early advances towards the edge of Antarctica, later landings, and stations, etc. Most of the book is the story of the establishment of the U.S. Amundson-Scott South Pole Station in 1957-58 by the first people to set foot at the Pole since Scott left the area in 1912.
