Edition Notes
'The Epistle Dedicatorie',in verse, is addressed 'To the most Noble, and no lesse deservedly-renowned Ladyes, as well Darlings, as Patronesses, of the Muses; Lucy, Countesse of Bedford; Mary, Countesse Dowager of Pembrooke; and Elizabeth, Lady Cary, (Wife of Sr. Henry Cary:) Glories of Women'; it is signed: 'The unfained lover, honorer, and admirer of your rare Perfections, Iohn Davies of Hereford'.
The DNB article on John Davies, of Hereford, poet and writing-master, records of this work: 'The sacred poems are followed by 'Rights of the Living and the Dead', in which occurs the fine poem describing 'The Picture of an Happy Man'.
Title-page supplied in manuscript; STC cites only one existing title-page for this work; the DNB cites an alternative title: 'In 1612 Davies published 'The Muses's Sacrifice, or Divine Meditations'; this is reflected in the running title of the first part; the second part has a separate sectional title-page, reading: 'Rights of the Living, and the Dead: Being, A proper Appendix to the precedent Meditations'; running title: 'A proper Appendix'.
