The Nemesis of Power is the definitive account of the General Staff of first the German Empire through the Weimar Republic and the birth and ultimate death of the Third Reich. Historical Adviser to the British Royal Archives, Sir John Wheeler-Bennett, gives a rather sympathetic portrayal of the Wehrmacht but certainly not of Hitler and the NSDAP themselves, as the struggle for control of military operations between the Army and SS as well as between civilian authorities and the paramilitary SA up until the Night of the Long Knives makes apparent. The account of German Army operations and political actions throughout the Interbellum is especially detailed and provides a great deal of invaluable information for the serious academic if not for the casual reader.
