Book Details
Edition Notes
Cover title.
Added illustrated t.p. (in part 1).
Small paper impression issued in 25 paper parts, numbered in ms. Hand-colouring not as highly finished as in the large paper parts. Part 12 includes "Table of Contents to Vol. 1 (Temporary)", listing plates as they were issued in the first 12 parts. "Corrigenda" notes incorrect title to plate 92 (part 7); plate 14 (part 17) incorrectly titled: Robes of Thomas Becket.
Cover imprint varies slightly, and appears either undated, or with dates 1840 or 1841. Parts 1-24 consist of 8 pages of text and 4 plates. Part 25 (supplement) consists of title pages (dated 1843), tables of contents, and introductory text. Tables of contents included in supplement indicate the final order of text and plates as they were intended to be bound into two volumes, which differs from the order in which they were issued in the parts.
Cover illustration on paper parts signed: Mary Byfield. Lower cover has advertisements for Shaw's other works.
Most plates are hand-coloured aquatints; also includes six colour-printed wood engraved plates as well as colour-printed cuts and initials throughout the text.
MASS copy 2: Lacking all after part 12.
