The letters were written to Dr. Hendrik Calkoen.

The work had been privately issued twice before, in New York by the same printer, 1789, and in London, 1786. "Never before published" may mean that this is the first public issue.

Signatures: pi² A-E⁶ F² (pi1 blank).

Two states of the title page noted, with the space between the rules above the imprint and the rule below "Never before published" measuring 5 mm. and 11 mm. respectively.
